I've always loved unusual, and especially dark, home decor. So I'm excited to share a little of that with you! In the future I'll be sharing some real life makeovers from the Crypt once we (hopefully) get moved, so if you love dark and alternative homes, make sure you sign up for the newsletter to keep up to date.

Don't be afraid of the dark

Decorating with dark colours may seem daunting, as it goes against the traditional notion of using light colours to make a space feel brighter and larger. However, when done right, using bold, dark shades can create a moody, sophisticated, and intimate atmosphere in any room.

If you love dark colours, or even black (my favourite!) read on for a few tips and don't be afraid to experiment!

Start with a focal point

If you're hesitant about committing to a fully dark room, start small by adding an accent piece. Add a statement piece of furniture or paint feature areas like a chimney breast or alcoves. Perhaps choose a bold piece of artwork that incorporates rich, deep colours like navy, emerald, charcoal and black. This will give the room a focal point and a sense of personality, without overwhelming the space.

Mix textures

To keep a darker room from feeling too flat, incorporate a variety of textures. Think soft velvet cushions, plush rugs, leather (or faux leather) and rough-hewn wooden furniture. The contrast of textures will add depth and visual interest to the space, making it feel cosy and inviting.

Layer lighting

When decorating with dark colours, lighting becomes even more important. Use a variety of light sources, including floor lamps, table lamps, pendant lights. Add candles and fairy lights to create layered lighting that adds depth, dimension and a warm glow. Check out our lighting for the perfect compliment to your dark decor.

Use mirrors and metallics

This will help brighten up a space by reflecting light: Place a large mirror on a wall opposite a window to bounce natural light around the room. Use smaller mirrors and metallic pieces throughout the room to create the illusion of more light and space.

Consider natural light

Think about natural light, especially if you’ll be using the room a lot during the day.

The more light a space receives, the more dark colour it can handle. If your room is naturally quite dark consider keeping some light areas to reflect the light.

Don't be afraid to use dark colours in a small space

Matching ceilings and walls can blur the edges and make the room feel larger, think about carrying colours onto the ceiling too.

And finally, break the rules if you like, it's your space!

Decorating with dark colours can be a bold choice, but it can create a cosy and sophisticated atmosphere. Embrace the drama and elegance of rich tones! Mix textures, layer lighting, and use mirrors. Balance with lighter colours to create a beautiful and inviting space that reflects your unique style and personality.
